Irene Van Dyk is an inspiration to all athletes

Brave – Irene, courageous – Irene, humble – Irene, strong – Irene, positive – Irene,  determined – Irene  and the list goes on to describe one of the best Netballers the world has ever seen.
Magic won the semi final in the ANZ Championship under such difficult circumstances after the passing of Irene’s Mum.  Irene played with tears in her eyes all game and could hardly crack a smile.  To know she played with a heavy heart makes me appreciate her playing our sport and how privileged we are to watch such a champion in action.
Having met Irene, she is truly one of the nicest people you could meet.  Her warm smile and settled approach makes you feel extremely comfortable in her company.  Her laugh is infectious and her positive attitude is present in every word she utters.
When Vixens and Magic battled it out in the final, I couldn’t help wanting Magic to win for Irene.  She had made such a massive decision to leave her family in South Africa many years ago to play for New Zealand,  Her sacrifice and commitment to her sport seemed to have come down to a very special moment in the final of the ANZ Championship.  To see her face at the end of the game gave me goosebumps as this was her dream to win the ANZ Championship alongside her team mates and her best friend and coach Noelene.
Wouldn’t we all love 10 Irene’s in our team.  How do we bottle her secret?  All I can say is her Mum and Dad would be very proud and also credit goes to them for parenting such a beautiful soul.
This week Irene has been named in the NZ squad and team trials will be held in early August.  We will see her in action again when she plays Aussie in the Constellation Cup this September.
We love you Irene.  You are truly an inspiration to all.
